"Billi", the Bordeaux new low-cost air terminal

This 4,000 m², wood-frame air terminal, called “Billi” (short for “Bordeaux illico”, Bordeaux straight away), represents an investment of 5.5 million euros.

Designed following discussion with low-cost airlines, it is operating since may 26th, opening up new travel destinations from Bordeaux. "Billi" is the first purpose-built, simplified-service air terminal in France. The objective of this project is to reduce the airport tax paid by the airlines by 30% and increase the number of "low cost" passengers in Bordeaux from 500,000 in 2008 to over 1 million by 2016. This category of travellers currently represents nearly 15% of the total traffic in Bordeaux.

The "Billi" terminal is designed to handle 4 aircrafts and 600 passengers at a time, with the objective of guaranteeing a turnaround time of only 25 minutes. In the “Billi” departure area, where passengers will spend a short time standing up, allows 0.75 m² per person, compared to 2 - 2.5 m² in traditional air terminals.

Furthermore, while the project does not allow any compromises on security, safety, and access for passengers with mobility issues, service in the terminal is specially designed to suit low-cost travel: both in the terminal and on board the aircraft, the policy is to "offer simplified services for cheaper travel".
