2010 ESSO Conference
From 15 to 17 September 2010, Bordeaux will be hosting the 15th European surgical oncology conference. The key local organizer is Professor Serge Evrard, a member of the Bordeaux Ambassador's Club.
November 2007: Serge Evrard, professor of oncology at Bordeaux University, surgeon at Institut Bergonié, and Vice President of the Société Française du Cancer (French Cancer Society), proposed Bordeaux as the venue for the conference of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), of which he is a board member.
Over the next few weeks, the Bordeaux Gironde Convention Bureau prepared the candidacy bid and analysed the feasability of organising the conference in Bordeaux: space in the Conference Center, accommodation, etc. The file was then submitted to the secretariat of ECCO, the Europe Cancer Organization, who compared the various proposals and short-listed the three most likely venues.
February 2008: Bordeaux was short-listed as a possible destination for ESSO 2010. The conference organizers came on an exploratory visit before they made their final choice of city. Which conference room is suitable for the Plenary sessions? Is the exhibition area far from the main auditoriums? Will participants be able to stay near the Conference Center? These were among the questions to be answered.
April 2008: Serge Evrard called us. The final decision had not been announced, but Bordeaux was apparently one of the front-runners!
September 2008: Bordeaux was officially selected on the eve of the Hague conference. This choice acknowledged not only the city's international influence and fascinating history, but also the excellence of its oncology facilities.
September 15 2010: Opening of the 15th conference. The organisers expect 900 participants from all over Europe to exchange the latest ideas on surgical treatment for cancer patients. The Société Française du Cancer and Société Française de Chirurgie Oncologique will also be actively involved. The conference will be preceded by a master class in liver surgery for metastases of colorectal tumours at the Institut Bergonié.
